Pedro Wonaeamirri speaks and performs in Venice during the Biennale!

This year Pedro has been a Mordant Family BLAK C.O.R.E Fellow through the University of Melbourne’s Museums and Collections Department. As part of the fellowship Pedro travelled to Venice to speak with Jilamara manager Will Heathcote at the Indigenous Visions Forum during the Venice Biennale. They discussed Tiwi ceremonial culture and contemporary art making on the islands, as well as Pedro’s experiences visiting Tiwi historical collections around the world. After the symposium Pedro performed Tiwi song and dance at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection.

Jilamara Arts is a remote Indigenous art centre in Milikapiti, Tiwi Islands. We are Aboriginal owned and we produce authentic Tiwi art – ironwood carved birds and Tutini poles, ochre paintings on bark, canvas, linen and paper, original limited edition prints and hand screenprinted textiles.

This artwork embodies the collective knowledge of the Tiwi people. It was created by and with the consent of the custodians of this knowledge. The intellectual and cultural property of this work belongs to the artist, the Tiwi people and their ancestors, through long standing living cultural practice.
