Backroads on Iview

Check out Backroads on ABC iview to learn more about the Tiwi Islands and see a snippet of Jilamara!

“Reported with warm-hearted curiosity by triple J newsreader Brooke Boney, this episode of the ABC’s ongoing exploration of Australia’s remote or little-seen communities alights on the Tiwi Islands. Situated 80 kilometres north of Darwin and home to a predominantly Indigenous population of about 3000 people, it’s a place opening up to the world, whether through digital devices or the first wave of tourists.” – Sydney Morning Herald

Jilamara Arts is a remote Indigenous art centre in Milikapiti, Tiwi Islands. We are Aboriginal owned and we produce authentic Tiwi art – ironwood carved birds and Tutini poles, ochre paintings on bark, canvas, linen and paper, original limited edition prints and hand screenprinted textiles.

This artwork embodies the collective knowledge of the Tiwi people. It was created by and with the consent of the custodians of this knowledge. The intellectual and cultural property of this work belongs to the artist, the Tiwi people and their ancestors, through long standing living cultural practice.
