Raelene Kerinauia
Raelene Kerinauia Lapuwatu is a senior artist and was one of the founders of Jilamara Arts and Crafts. She began designing and screen-printing textiles in 1985 as a part of the Adult Education Programme at Milikapiti and then started to paint in 1989 following the establishment of Jilamara Arts and Crafts, in 1988. Kerinauia initially painted with brushes, but since 1999 has transferred to using the kayimwagakini / ironwood comb customarily used for ceremonial body painting. The making of the comb is a skill itself, and Raelene’s late husband, carver James Tipiloura, carved Raelene’s painting combs. She has become well known for fine geometric jilamara / designs. Raelene has remained a strong voice of governance on the art centre executive committee.
