Kurumpuka or mud crab are hunted in the mangroves where they burrow under roots and in the mud. A forked stick is used to prise out the crab. They are handled with great care as they can ‘throw a nipper’ and sever fingers or toes! Crabs are usually cooked up on hot coals.
