Pius is a strong Culture man and leader in Jilamara’s Murrungumirri men’s carving shed. He was an early influence in the development of Jilamara Arts & Crafts in the late 80’s, and held the position of President at the Art Centre.

One of his Tutuni poles stands proudly in the communities collection in the Muluwurri Museum, representing the important role he has played in the history of the Art Centre.

Over the years, Pius’ skills as a carver have been celebrated in major group exhibitions.

As a community leader, Pius has also held the chair of the Milikapiti Council on multiple occasions. He currently holds a position on the Board of the Tiwi Regional Council.

Pius’ mother Mary Magdalene Tipungwuti is a senior Jilamara artist, and his younger brother John Martin Tipungwuti is also a respected carver.

John Martin and Pius are the nephews of the highly acclaimed Tiwi carver Declan Apuatimi, their father Dermot Tipungwuti’s half-brother.
