D Lan Galleries, New York | Timothy Cook
D Lan Galleries is honoured to present Timothy Cook’s first solo exhibition in the United States, in collaboration with Jilamara Arts and Crafts Association. Presented at our Upper East Side gallery in New York, Kurluwukari – meaning ‘circle’ in Tiwi language – brings together a major new body of work across bark and linen.
Widely regarded as the modern master of Tiwi painting, Cook works exclusively with natural ochres and pigments drawn from the Country around his home community of Milikapiti on Melville Island. Ground and prepared by hand, the pigments are applied in bold, rich fields to linen and seasoned stringybark, harvested and prepared at Jilamara. As a result, Cook’s practice is inseparable from Country and remains rooted in the living landscape of the Tiwi Islands, its seasons and Tiwi identity.
