'Back to Culture' 2017-06-09
This painting tells the story of the strong collective Tiwi Culture. It shows an old man sitting by the fire telling stories dressed in traditional Tiwi pamijini (head dress and armbands), his body painted in Jilamara (design) ready for ceremony. In the background our ancestors dance from the other side during pukumani. We paint our bodies with Jilamara to disguise ourselves from evil spirits when performing the pukumani ceremony. It is important to keep telling these stories especially to our young ones to keep bringing them back to our culture.
