The Bombing of Darwin was a significant event in the Top End’s World War II history. The Tiwi people significantly assisted the Australian government in the war effort. The Tiwi called into the mainland to warn of Japanese fighter planes just prior to the Bombing of Darwin and Matthias Ulungura (1921–1980) famously took Australia’s first Japanese prisioner of war on Australian soil after the pilot crashed on Melville Island in February 1942. The Japanese pilot, Hajime Toyoshima, survived the crash, but Ulungura crept up behind him, surprising him with a tomahawk and took him prisoner. These events had a huge impact on the communities of the islands and to this day stories such as the Bombing of Darwin are told and shared with younger generations through Tiwi yoyi (dance).
